We’re so glad that you came to Zona Camp this year! As we get to hear from amazing speakers we also want to make sure that we are spending time with God ourselves. Jesus describes this idea of intentional time set aside to spend with God (Matthew 6:5-8). We want to give you a tool to spend time with God. This week your church might have you do it all on your own, or maybe you’ll all do it as a group, but SOAP gives a way for you to read your Bible and really get something out of it.
S is for Scripture
We start with time in the Bible. The goal is to read something that we can understand and keep in our head. If you’ve been reading the Bible for a long time that might be something longer like a chapter or maybe even several chapters, but if this is newer to you it might be better to read something a little shorter and that’s okay. We start with the Bible because that is where we get truth about God.
O is for Observation
Observations are what we can see from what we read. It helps to work through what was said in your own words and ideas and try to pick out what stands out to you. Is there something that sticks out? Does it seem to have a big idea or something it’s trying to get across? Is there something you learn about God? Is there something you’re called to obey? Does something repeat or is there a weird word? We want to use what we learn in English class to make some observations about what the Bible says.
A is for Application
Now that we have read the Bible and tried to observe what it’s saying, we want to put it into action. Was there something we say about God’s character? Maybe we want to pursue that and be more Christ-like. Maybe we see an example of a human making really bad choices, but sometimes we do something similar. It could be time for us to repent and choose to live a different way. Application is the idea that if what I am reading is true, then what does God call me to do? We want to take truth about God and move it from head knowledge, down into our hearts to change us, and ultimately into our hands where we can act it out.
P is for Prayer
We’ve done something amazing! We’ve read God’s word, understood it, and now we recognize that God wants us to do something. Don’t keep that to yourself. Talk to God about it. Talk to God about what you read and now understand about him, but also talk to him about everything else. You can tell God all about your life, he wants to hear from you. He wants to have a relationship with you; God cares about you. Confess your sin. Share your highs and lows. God wants you to talk with him; to know him and be fully known by him.
S is for Scripture
If you’re used to reading the Bible read all of Psalm 63. If reading the Bible is newer to you read Psalm 63:1-8
O is for Observation
Does anything stand out to you? Is there a big idea or something that you learn about God or humanity?
A is for Application
If what we read is true, what is God calling you to do? How can you live this out? Is there something you’re called to obey or something to repent of?
P is for Prayer
Talk to God. Share with him about what you learned and tell him about your life and day. God wants to hear you and to have a relationship with you.
S is for Scripture
If you’re used to reading the Bible read all of Psalm 27. If reading the Bible is newer to you read Psalm 27:1-3, 7-10. As you read them try and see if you can name the big idea of each stanza.
Regardless of where you are with Bible reading, let’s try reading the whole chapter of Psalm 40 today. I know it might seem like a lot, but we think you can do it! When you finish a stanza see if you can figure out the big idea and put all the big ideas together.
O is for Observation
Does anything stand out to you? Is there a big idea or something that you learn about God or humanity?
A is for Application
How can you do this? Does your speech need to change? If what we read is true, what is God calling you to do? How can you live this out? Is there something you’re called to obey or something to repent of?
P is for Prayer
Talk to God. Share with him about what you learned and tell him about your life and day. God wants to hear you and to have a relationship with you.
